Whakaari/White Island eruption: What we know of the people missing, injured, or dead

Of the 47 people on Whakaari/White Island at the time of the eruption on Monday afternoon, at least five have died, many are injured, some critically, and eight are missing, feared dead.

The Red Cross Family Links website listed the numerous people who were feared missing.

They were registered by loved ones following news of the natural disaster.

DEAD: Hayden Marshall-Inman

Whakatāne man and tour guide Hayden Marshall-Inman was killed by the eruption. He was the first of five confirmed deaths.

It is understood the man, one of five confirmed deaths, is Hayden Marshall-Inman.

Former mayor Tony Bonne said he knew Marshall-Inman and his family personally: “It’s very sad that he’s lost his life.”

His body was believed to still be on the island. His brother said the family has had no communication with authorities to discuss his recovery.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with everyone, but we just want them back… off the island,” said the man, who wished to remain anonymous.

MISSING: Tipene Maangi

The 23-year-old tour guide was among those missing on the island still. He had only been working for White Island Tours for a few months, but a family member said he loved his job.

His whānau were praying for his return and held a vigil at Whakatāne wharf on Tuesday morning. They then gathered at Te Mānuka Tūtahi Marae to say karakia and were “holding out hope”.

Anthony Langford, 51, his wife Kristine, and their two teenage children Jesse, 19, and Winona, 17, were marked as missing on the Family Links website.

A family of four from Australia was among those still unaccounted for.

They are believed to be from North Sydney in New South Wales, Australia.

INJURED: Newlyweds Lauren and Matt Urey

Lauren and Matt Urey​ from the United States were on their honeymoon in New Zealand at the time. They were travelling on the Royal Caribbean cruise ship that had docked in Tauranga prior to venturing out on a day tour to the island.

The couple were rescued from the island and rushed to hospital with severe burns, according to Lauren’s mother Barbara Barham. There had been no update on their condition.

INJURED: Jason Griffiths

Jason Griffiths, a 33-year-old from Coffs Harbour in New South Wales, Australia, was rescued from the island on Monday.

His family confirmed he was among the injured and was currently seriously ill in hospital.

MISSING: Zoe Hosking, Lisa Hosking and Gavin Dallow

Fifteen-year-old Zoe Hosking from Adelaide, South Australia, was among those missing along with her mum, Lisa Hosking, and her mum’s partner Gavin Dallow, a lawyer.

Zoe’s school, St Aloysius College (SAC), released a statement saying she and her family were missing on the island.

“Information is scant at this time but SAC is now seeking to provide preliminary advice to the school community,” the statement read.

Australian Karla Mathews was still unaccounted for. She was believed to be travelling with Jason Griffiths and Richard Elzer.

Richard Elzer​, from Coffs Harbour in New South Wales, was listed as missing on the Family Links website.

MISSING: Alvin Puah​

Singaporean Alvin Puah​ was believed to be travelling around New Zealand on his honeymoon with wife, Gladys Sin. Puah was listed as missing on the register, but Sin wasn’t listed at all, it was not known if she was on the island.
