A Japanese news report says Taiwan should be next to join the international trade bloc CPTPP. The Fuji News Network reported on Friday, the same day that the United Kingdom became the first new member to be admitted into the CPTPP since its founding in 2018.
The CPTPP is made up of eleven original members, including Japan, Australia, Canada, and New Zealand. Their agreement focuses on promoting free trade and lowering tariffs between global partners.
After Taiwan expressed its interest in joining the CPTPP, China submitted its application to the trade bloc in September 2021. Taiwan followed with its own official bid six days later.
There is some tension surrounding both countries’ interest in joining the CPTPP, because if China is first accepted, Beijing will likely block Taiwan from joining. New members must receive unanimous approval in order to join the CPTPP.
China has been trying to develop stronger diplomatic relations with many CPTPP members since applying to join the trade bloc. But it remains unclear whether Beijing will commit to respecting the CPTPP’s rules, some of which are in conflict with current Chinese policies.
